When those who had come to Virginia City in the quest of gold and riches found that many of their dreams were not going to materialize, they began to look elsewhere. Many decided to try to find new locations where gold might be hidden. This led to other industries of agriculture and lumber as well as mining for minerals other than gold. The first post office was established in 1866. It is thought that in 1874 the Townsite of Sheridan was first platted and surveyed. The first school taught in Sheridan was held in a little log cabin on Mill Creek in the year 1865. Then in 1867 a little log school was built in the town proper on what is now Water Street. The building was used for religious purposes as well. In time the log school was superseded by a new frame building. The after 1900 a new brick building on the southeastern part of town was built. The religious interest of the new community began to take form in the early 1860's. Services were held in the log school for all denominations until a church was eventually completed in 1873 and is now known as Bethany Hall. The town of Sheridan was incorporated in 1893 with a population of 350 and O.F. Parmeter as the first mayor. As the town continued to grow, old log places were replaced with new and better buildings. The Sheridan State Bank was built in 1903 on the corner of Main and Mill Streets. Other businesses included dry goods, candies and ice cream, telephone exchange, furniture, undertaker, druggists, dentist, five saloons, three blacksmiths, two livery barns, milliner store, and two doctors. A privately owned water works system was later taken over by the city government. Electricity was installed at first with four acr lights on Main Street, all business houses and a number of dwellings with the first electricity coming from the light plant in Brandon.
